TMJ/TMD Therapy in Randwick

The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is the joint that connects the lower jaw to the skull. Temporomandibular disorders (TMD) create painful symptoms in the jaw joint itself or the muscles of the jaw, often resulting in clicking when opening the mouth. TMD can also lead to headaches and neck or back pain. Doctors often refer patients with TMJ pain to a physiotherapist or chiropractor and finally, over time, the patient will end up seeing a dentist, who is usually the one who can help.

Our Approach

At Randwick Dental Clinic, we assess patients at their regular check-ups to determine if they are having symptoms related to TMD. The usual avenue for TMJ pain is to instruct the patient on specific exercises that can help restore muscle function and ease pain. We may also recommend using heat to soothe the stressed muscles.

When the jaw joint is under stress, it can result in clenching the teeth or grinding. In most patients, this can occur both during the day and at night. When we make patients aware of the situation we find that they can often reduce daytime grinding by up to 50%.

Price of Nightguards

The cost for a nightguard is $745.

We can let you know the exact rebate and any gap using your card at the clinic, or you can contact your Fund about items like: 965.

We also offer discounts and flexible payment options such as direct health fund rebate using HICAPS, as well as financing through Denticare and Afterpay. This way you’ll know exactly what fees are involved before you agree to treatment.

Night Guards

Naturally there is no way to consciously stop grinding your teeth while you’re asleep. A common treatment approach to nighttime grinding is to create a mouthguard. We will take moulds of your teeth and create a custom night guard to stop the joint from creating disharmony between the left and right sides and help prevent cracking the teeth from grinding. Since the nightguard reduces pressure on the teeth, it also helps to alleviate pain and helps the muscles and jaw joints relax and release their tension.

Nightguards can also be worn during the day.

We will evaluate your night guard every six months at your regular visits. Typically, nightguards can last for many years. If you do wear it down and it needs to be replaced, it’s a simple task to take new moulds and make a new night guard—a much better outcome than grinding down your teeth and breaking them!
