Do you experience jaw pain, teeth grinding, or clenching? Maybe you hear a popping sound when you chew or yawn. If you’re like many people, you may have a TMJ (temporomandibular joint) disorder. Dentist, Dr Kat Stankoska at Randwick Dental Clinic offers a successful solution that goes beyond traditional night guards and pain relievers. Injectables in the masseter muscle – commonly known for reducing the appearance of wrinkles – have emerged as a highly helpful way to relieve tension, protect teeth, and improve overall comfort.
Since our practice started offering injectables, Randwick Dental Clinic has seen increased interest in the treatment.
How Do Injectables Help?
The masseter muscle is the primary muscle responsible for chewing, but when it’s overactive due to chronic clenching or grinding (bruxism), it can cause pain, headaches, and even damage to the teeth. Injecting a muscle relaxant into this area reduces the intensity of contractions, which:
- Eases jaw pain and tension
- Reduces teeth grinding and clenching
- Helps prevent further tooth wear and cracking
- May create a subtle facial slimming effect for some individuals
As Principal Dentist Dr Mario emphasises, “Many people who grind their teeth are often given a night guard, which is a protective plate worn at night. However, we’re now seeing that many of these patients benefit from injectables as well.”
What to Expect From Treatment
Some patients notice relief within a few days, but full effects are typically seen in about two weeks. You may experience a slight weakening of the muscle when trying to clench, but you’ll still be able to eat, speak, and smile.
Most patients experience relief for four to six months, with many returning for top-up treatments around the six-month mark. Side effects are rare, but some patients may need dosage adjustments for optimal results. One uncommon occurrence is a “paradoxical masseter bulge,” which can be corrected with an additional injection.
How Much Does It Cost?
The cost of injectables for TMJ and teeth grinding ranges from $650 to $750, depending on individual needs. Want to discuss your options without any pressure? We offer a free consultation.
